The South African Police Service (SAPS) have arrested two suspects in connection with the murder of former world boxing champion Zolani Tete, who was shot dead in Mdantsane in the Eastern Cape province on Friday night.
According to channelafrica.co.za, SAPS confirmed that two persons of interest, aged 30 and 22, were apprehended in KuGompo on Saturday, August 22 following what police described as a swift intelligence-driven operation involving multiple law enforcement units.
The suspects are being questioned in connection with the murder of Tete and the attempted murder of a 27-year-old woman who was wounded during the attack.
According to SAPS Spokesperson Nobuntu Gantana, Tete had just arrived at a residence in NU17, Mdantsane, when two armed men wearing balaclavas emerged from a vehicle and opened fire.
Tete, 38, died at the scene while the woman sustained injuries.
Police said additional arrests are expected as investigators continue to pursue several leads. “Due to the sensitive nature of the ongoing investigation, the SAPS is unable to disclose further details regarding the motive or the circumstances surrounding the arrests at this time,” SAPS said in a statement.
SAPS urged members of the public and the media not to speculate about the case or circulate unverified information that could compromise the investigation and future court proceedings.
