World Cup 2026: Why I chose to play for South Africa over Nigeria – Ime Okon

Date:

South Africa defender, Ime Okon has revealed why he chose the South African nation over Nigeria.

He also refuted claims that he was approached by those in charge of Nigerian football to change his international allegiance, emphasizing that his connection with South Africa was the key reason for his commitment to Bafana Bafana instead of the Super Eagles.

The Hannover defender, who was also eligible to play for Nigeria, is currently a member of South Africa’s squad participating in the ongoing 2026 FIFA World Cup in the United States, Mexico, and Canada.

Okon played the full 90 minutes as South Africa fought to a 1-1 draw against the Czech Republic on Thursday.

In a video shared by Nigerian journalist, Osasu Obayiuwana, the centre-back stated why he is representing South Africa, insisting the SA team has always been his preferred option.

Okon said, “I don’t know what to say but at the end of the day, I know where my heart lies. I have played for South Africa in the COSAFA games and I scored.”

Asked  about whether Nigeria had made attempts to persuade him to alter his international allegiance, Okon rejected the idea, affirming that there had been no serious overture from the three-time African champions.

“Not really, South Africa is my home. That’s what I have to say,” he disclosed.

The failure of the Super Eagles to qualify for the 2026 World Cup signifies that Nigeria has missed the tournament for the second consecutive edition, having also failed to qualify for the previous tournament, thereby extending an undesirable streak for a nation that made its World Cup debut in 1994.
