NDC alleges attack on members during Enugu grassroots meeting

Date:

The Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, has alleged that “state-sponsored thugs” attacked its members during a grassroots meeting in Obuoffia Ward, Nkanu West Local Government Area of Enugu State.

The party made the allegation in a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Osa Director, Esq., while condemning what it described as an unprovoked attack on its members.

“This incessant assault on our members by state-sponsored thugs must stop,” the NDC said, insisting that it has a constitutional right to hold peaceful meetings and participate in the democratic process.

The party also accused security agencies of failing to act promptly against attacks involving opposition members in Enugu and other parts of the South-East.

It said the party had previously suffered two attacks in Imo State during a town hall meeting and consultation by its senatorial candidate, Uche Onyeagocha.

The NDC further alleged that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in Enugu was “jittery and disturbed” by what it described as the growing momentum of the opposition party.

It said the alleged attack would not stop its members from organising, mobilising and campaigning ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The party called on security agencies to investigate the incident and prosecute those responsible, including their alleged sponsors.

“The NDC will not be cowed. We will continue to organise, mobilise, and defend the democratic space,” the party said.
