English referee Anthony Taylor has announced his retirement from elite officiating, effective immediately after a 20-year career spanning 831 matches.
The 47-year-old cited the intense pressure and constant scrutiny of the role, concluding his career after officiating Spain’s 1-0 win over Portugal at the FIFA World Cup 2026.

“Officiating at the elite level has been an immense privilege, but the pressure is intense and the scrutiny is constant,” Taylor said in a statement.
“The time is now right to step aside and look forward to transitioning to the next chapter of my career.
“I want to express my deepest gratitude to my two assistants Gary and Adam, my refereeing colleagues and everyone connected with the game for all their support over the years.
“Most importantly, I want to thank my family and friends for their unwavering support throughout the immense sacrifices this career has demanded.”
Taylor’s illustrious career included 432 Premier League matches over 16 seasons. In England, he took charge of every major domestic cup final, including the 2017 and 2020 FA Cup finals.

He spent 14 years on the FIFA international list, officiating at the 2022 and 2026 World Cups, as well as the UEFA European Championships in 2020 and 2024.
Notably, he officiated the Denmark-Finland match at Euro 2020, where he was praised for his quick actions in stopping play after Christian Eriksen suffered a cardiac arrest.
