World Cup 2026: Oliseh Faults Tuchel’s Tactics In England’s Defeat To Argentina

Date:

Former Super Eagles head coach Sunday Oliseh has criticised Thomas Tuchel’s tactical decisions following England’s dramatic 2-1 defeat to Argentina in the semi-finals of the FIFA World Cup 2026.

England’s hopes of reaching a first World Cup final since lifting the trophy in 1966 were shattered after Lionel Scaloni’s side produced a late comeback on Wednesday.

Argentina Rally To Beat England

The Three Lions appeared to be on course for victory after Anthony Gordon broke the deadlock early in the second half, with Tuchel’s men controlling large spells of the contest.

However, the game turned dramatically in the closing stages as Argentina once again showcased their resilience.

Lionel Messi inspired the comeback by providing the assist for Enzo Fernández’s equaliser in the 85th minute before delivering a superb cross for Lautaro Martínez, who powered home the winning header just minutes later.

Oliseh Questions Tuchel’s Tactics

Tuchel’s substitutions and tactical adjustments came under intense criticism after England relinquished their advantage, with many questioning the team’s inability to manage the closing stages of such a crucial encounter.

Oliseh was among those unimpressed by England’s approach, arguing that Tuchel’s tactical decisions allowed Argentina to seize the initiative when the match was there to be won.

The former Nigeria captain also suggested England became overly passive after taking the lead, conceding possession and territory to an Argentina side renowned for punishing opponents in decisive moments.

“One of the worst-managed games in World Cup history. Leading 1-0 with over 25 minutes left, and you park the entire bus inside your own box? Pulling the lone striker deep invited relentless pressure. When you stop playing and only defend, a 2-1 heartbreak is inevitable,” Oliseh wrote on X.

Argentina will face Spain in the final at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey on Sunday.
